Living with a learning disability can be challenging for the children who have them as well as their parents and teachers. The road may be frustrating and it can be hard for parents and role models to help instill confidence in children who have difficulties when it comes to things like reading and writing. For kids with dyslexia, ADD, ADHD, Downs syndrome and kids on the autism spectrum, things like recreational taekwondo can have more of a positive effect than adults may think. Here at Sensory Taekwon-Do we provide a wide range of recreational services in Ridgewood NJ that can help kids regain confidence while also building unique skills.

Here at Sensory Taekwon-Do, our instructors are not only black belts in taekwondo, but they are also well-versed in a variety of different learning and behavioral conditions that affect children as well. Our director, Dr. Escamilla, is a 2nd degree black belt in taekwondo but he also has advanced training in neurology and functional medicine with an emphasis on early childhood spectrum disorders. By combining these practices, Dr. Escamilla has been able to create unique programs along with instructor and 5th degree black belt, Master Kim. These programs actively engage all of the senses, allowing kids on the spectrum to experience a physical activity like taekwondo in a way that makes sense to them and is beneficial to them in harnessing useful skills and modes of understanding as well as communication. With recreational services in Ridgewood NJ as well as a number of specialized programs, kids on the spectrum, including kids with dyslexia, can learn new skills and master them in a way that makes sense to them.

For children with conditions like dyslexia, their brains work a little differently and different approaches to learning can help them in various other aspects of their life while also helping them build confidence. By stimulating areas in the brain that incorporate balance, body awareness, muscle coordination, strength and working memory, at Sensory Taekwon-DO we can promote growth and improve connectivity for children with learning disabilities. To be effective, treatment requires a whole brain, whole body approach. Our breakthrough services and martial arts program is custom designed for each child’s neurological profile. Children with learning disabilities are often affected by a wide range of symptoms, many of which can benefit from our sensory taekwondo and special needs recreation in Oradell. We accept children that have been labeled with Autism, PDD, and Asperger’s. We also provide Taekwondo for those with ADD/ADHD, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, and other learning and memory problems. Those patients with Down’s Syndrome can also benefit from our special needs recreation. We incorporates the senses during the Taekwon-Do sessions. The auditory is stimulated by playing music specifically designed to right brain and left brain functions. Visual senses are used when students are modeling the instructor. Vestibular encompasses balance and this worked on heavily during the session. Proprioceptive involves the sense of position of your body parts. Students must use this sense to focus on where they are placing their own body parts are they are performing the martial art exercise. The tactile or sense of touch is brought in throughout the session with the climbing wall, balls and other equipment that is used during the group.

At Sensory TKD we adapt what is known about nervous system function to prescribe corrective exercises and activities to help improve and strengthen connections between brain structures. Our special needs recreation in Oradell has evolved to include sensory integration, brain balancing activities, and nutritional interventions thus making it a true whole body-whole brain approach to treatment.
